How far is the Lodge from Joburg and Durban?Three and a half hours from Joburg and two and a half hours from Durban, one and a half hours from Pmb.
How far is the Hideaway from the Lodge and is it still private?Its about 100m away and totally separate
We plan to leave early on Fri morning - is it possible I can request a early check-in and on Sunday, can we leave at lunch time?No, sorry. You may check in from 12 on Friday and depending on whether I have guests coming in, the departure time is 10am.
What must I bring? We suggest the following items to make your stay more enjoyable: Torches, towels, ice, portable cd-player, board games, books, walking shoes, sunscreen.
Miners lamps are very useful as solar lighting is not powerful
Toilet paper, dishwashing liquid and bath soap is supplied.
What are the Check-in and Check-out times?Check-in is at Midday, 12:00 . Please check out by 10:00 in the morning.
Is there hot water? Yes
Is there a bath or shower? We offer hot showers, but no bathtubs. Please ask Bhekhi for the baby bath if required.
Do the ablutions have the bathroom separately from the bedrooms - i.e. they aren't bedroom-en-suite?The bathroom is separate in all cottages, nothing is en-suite.
Are pets welcome? Yes
Is there an Oven or stove? Yes, there is a gas oven in the Hideaway and the lodge has four gas plates as well as an oven.
Do you have Pots and Pans? Both the Hideaway and Lodge have fully stocked kitchens.
Do the cottages at the Lodge have tea and coffee facilities?No,There is one kitchen in the main central entertainment area
Do we need to request the size of bed (single or king size) for the cottages before we arrive?Yes
Are there any pubs/country clubs near the lodge, as there is rugby on the Sat we will be there and would like to watch the games?We recommend the Bridge Lodge in Winterton (22kms away).
Is their electricity? No, but lights are powered by solar panels, so you wont be left in the dark.
There are no plug points in the cottages, so leave electrical appliances at home.
Do you have working fridges? No, but we do have gas deepfreezes.
Is there a TV? No.
Do you have a Microwave? No, there are no Plug points but there is solar powered lighting in all the cottages.
Is there a Potjie? Yes, there is a potjie pot in the lodge and one in the Hideaway. 2 large Potjie's in the Lodge and a 5 litre in the Hideaway.
Is there a risk of Malaria? No.
How much is it to get in at Spionkop Nature Reserve? R15 per person
In the Spionkop Nature Reserve, what type of animals are there?No cats. Rhino. Lots of Buck. Wildebeest. Giraffe. Warthog.
How much is the Horse riding and how old must children be? The rides cost R75, last one and a half hours. The rides depart at 8am and 2pm. Children must be 12 and over. We recommend that you prebook the rides on 036-4881578 or Fax : 036-4881065. Please go to office on arrival at the reserve, not to the stables.
Can I swim in the river? Yes, when the river is low it is safe, but during periods of heavy rainfall, or flood swimming is not advised. There are NO Crocodiles or Hippos or bilharzia in the water.
Are there fish in the river?Definitely, yes! As the picture shows, there are some large catches to be had. The river offers Yellow Fish and Carp.
Can I hire a fishing rod? Yes, there are rods for hire at R20 per day. Ask Bhekhi.
Are there tubes and canoes available? Yes, but please note that these are for other guests use as well, so please take good care to ensure someone else may make use of them. You will be billed for damages, loss of paddles and canoes.
Can we bring our own canoe?Yes. Please do.
Is there a maid? Yes, Juliette will wash dishes, make beds everyday and clean the cottage. She arrives in the morning and leaves at four in the afternoon. Please request her services with the camp Manager Bhekhi when arriving.
Can we tip the staff, and how much? Bhekhi and Juliette are brother and sister, so please tip them individually. Tips can range from R20 to R100 each, per weekend, but this depends on your generosity.
Can we drink the tap water? Yes, but many guests bring their own drinking water as our tap water is from a borehole, which is drinkable.
Is the area safe? Yes, our property is fenced off. The lodge and Hideaway is located in a problem free area.
Is there a Fireplace? Yes, each cottage has a fireplace. We do provide coal and kindling.
Will the fireplaces be filled and cleaned by Juliette and her brother everyday?Yes. Coal and kindling is provided for indoor fire. Please ask Bhekhi to light it for you.
Are there Braai facilities? Yes. You can purchase wood at R7 a bundle from us. We purchase the wood from the locals to support their enterprise and all proceeds go to them.
Can we bring our own Wood? Is the wood sold by the locals hard wood?The wood supplied is Acacia. Please bring your own should you so wish.
Can we bring our quad bikes? If you book out the lodge and the Hideaway only. Small quadbikes only may be used in the vicinity of the lodge and NOT in the game reserve. Please ask permission to bring them before you come.
